Teaching Biography

Committed to the development of healthy classical production in singers of all ages, Catherine has been an active private teacher for more than 30 years.   She served a combined total of 16 years on faculties at The Potomac School in McLean, Virginia, at St. Mary's School in Raleigh, and at Meredith College, where during her 10 year tenure her students won the annual Concerto Competition nine times. Her students perform both locally and nationally in opera and music theater in the US and abroad and have included two Miss North Carolinas as well as a two-time Regional Finalist in the Met Council Auditions. Her students have consistently been winners at the state, regional, and national levels of competitions sponsored by such groups as the National Federation of Music Clubs, the National Association of Teachers of Singing, the National Federation of Woman's Clubs, and the highly competitive annual ARTS and Talent Search sponsored by the National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts (www.artsawards.org) in Miami, Florida. Catherine's students have been National Finalists in the Music Teachers National Association Senior Voice competition four times in recent years, finishing 3rd in 2005, and 2nd in 2006, and she was the teacher of six NC state winners between 2005 and 2012. She returned in March, 2011 to the National Finals of MTNA in Milwaukee where her student was the 2nd place winner. Catherine's high school students have been offered scholarships in voice to such schools as the NEC (New England Conservatory), Eastman, Peabody, Manhattan, the Hartt (University of Hartford) , The Juilliard School, The University of Maryland, The University of Michigan, Boston University, Boston Conservatory, Oberlin College, The Ohio State University, Vanderbilt, The University of North Carolina, The University of North Carolina at Greensboro, North Carolina School of the Arts, and many others.
A frequent guest clinician and competition adjudicator, for such organizations as Seagle Music Colony, Opera Carolina, North Carolina Music Teachers Association, Stephen F. Austin University and others, Catherine is an active member of the National Federation of Music Clubs, the National Association of Teachers of Singing, and the Music Teachers National Association.
